Grille for Dome Sir John Soane's Museum, Lincoln's Inn Fields.
1992
This was part of a major programme of repair and restauration of
this museum, built and amended by Sir John Soane between 1792 -
1835. The design came from a 19th century drawing by architect J.D.Wilde,
who was curator from 1878 - 1892.
The 2m dia. main frame was constructed in six sections on a shaped
timber drum. The many components were made with the help of Claudia
Petley, using traditional hot-forging techniques and then joined
with over 100 fire welds. The sections were then riveted together
with the use of spacer bars, and fixed above the glass dome to a
system of lugs.

Staircase & balustrade for a private Chelsea Residence.
Architects: Munkenback & Marshall. 1989
The client was inspired by the staircase at the Picasso museum in
Paris, and wanted balustrading with an organic rather than a geometric
feel. The staircase rises up through 5 stories and the design is
a non repeat run of 23 metres, each piece forged separately. It
was assembled on drawn-up boards and riveted together with the help
of John and Dom Hesp. Installation of the balustrade presented an
interesting problem when the client decided to replace the existing
staircase - of which measurements had been taken - with a new one.
This meant that all fixing points had to be calculated from the
architects drawings, templates made to fit fixing plates into place
before the stairs were completed, and a lot of fingers crossing
when it came to the actual fix to pristine limed oak treads and
floor.
