Pair
of Lanterns for the Broadway Portico of St Paul's Chapel, in
the Parish of Trinity Church, New York City. 1998
St
Paul's Chapel, begun in 1764, is the oldest public building in New
York City and was George Washington's church during the first years
of his presidency.
This
was a project in collaboration with Hugh Harrison and architects
Allen & Harbinson of NY. The design was based on lanterns at
St Martin in the Fields, London.
The
roof of the lantern housed the recessed down lighting, which also
illuminated three dummy candles with gilded flame shapes in the
lantern body. This was crowned by a pineapple finial into which
the hanging tubes, suspending the lanterns from the ceiling 14 feet
above, and 3 tie rods securing all to the masonry, were connected.
The hanging rods contain high tensile wire, adjustable with turnbuckles
and are connected to a winch in a loft above the ceiling, in order
to lower the lanterns for future maintenance. All components were
manufactured from profile cut M/S, the lanterns fully glazed, with
a two pack epoxy weatherproofing finish and gilded details.
Dossal Rail Medallions for the Church of the Heavenly Rest,
New York. 1997
The
church, built in the 1920's recently suffered fire damage, so the
project was partly a restoration job, whilst accepting that it was
to be new work. The commission came as a result of collaboration
with Hugh Harrison, a conservator who supplied the church with the
overall works, all of which were made in England.
The
Dossal Rail Medallions were made to the original design using Chris
Topp's 2mm re-rolled 18th Century wrought iron plate. The repousse
work was caried out on pitch blocks and rivetted to plasma cut and
forged backplates. Edges were chisel cut, polished to armour bright
and clear laquered. Symbols gilded in 22ct italian gold leaf.
